A beautiful October is coming to an end, fall has definitely set in, and winter is not far behind. It’s time to embrace slower days and all the cozy sweaters, socks and rain gear! Read on for recent happenings around town and what’s coming up.
Time to visit the bookstore
A bookstore is central to a beach town. If the weather is sunny, you read on the beach (maybe with a blanket). If it’s rainy, you read inside by the fire. Manzanita has been home to the Cloud & Leaf Bookstore for 20 years. It’s one of the few businesses open every day of the week. On October 12, our hometown bookstore opened its doors at a new location, four blocks up and across the street.
If you were in town for the Book Brigade on Oct. 5, you saw community members lining the street and lovingly pass 100 hand-chosen books from the old to the new location. It was heartwarming and inspiring to be part of this symbolic event that united booklovers of all ages. There was a young man next to me who read every title and author name aloud as he passed each book. On the other side were two female authors whose books were one of the 100. There was even a young boy excitedly running up the sidewalk giving us the play-by-play of what was happening at the other end of the line.
The new location at 447 Laneda has more space, more light, more books and art supplies. Owner Holly Lorincz is planning for more fun as well – stay tuned for upcoming workshops and events. Here’s to the next 20 years of Cloud & Leaf!
Give Back, Get Cozy
Right next to Cloud & Leaf is another town favorite, UnFurl, that celebrated 20 years in Manzanita earlier this year. It’s not too late to donate to Unfurl’s Give Back, Get Cozy Event! Owners Suzy and Judson have a quest to collect 500 quality clothing items by the end of October. Maybe you’re cleaning out your closet, pulling out the boots and bringing those sweaters to the forefront? Until October 31, you can bring in 1-10 clean, new and like new cold weather items. Think jeans, coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, flannels, long sleeve shirts, boots and sneakers, hats and gloves. You’ll receive 20% off one full-price clothing item as a thank you.
Are you a Friend of the Library?
Speaking of books, the North Tillamook Library Friends (NTLF) membership drive is in full swing. You say you have a library card, but are you a member of the Friends of the Library? While Tillamook County owns the books and staffs the library, NTLF is a unique group whose membership funds the maintenance and improvement of the library’s physical building and grounds. Individual and business memberships are only $10 and family memberships are $15.
