Manzanita Connections – Happy New Year!
NY eve/day events, tree pickup, NCRD winter schedule, and businesses on break
Time once again for the turning of a new year. They seem to come quicker these days. (does that happen with age? … asking for a friend.) What does come with age apparently is that I said my last newsletter (Dec. 21) was the last one of the year, and here I am sending another one out on Dec. 31. So, this is technically the last one of the year! Going forward, I’ll be back on my biweekly schedule.
In any case, Happy New Year and here’s a bonus newsletter!
May this find you with some quiet time to reflect on the past year and to look at the year ahead. Sending everyone well wishes for peace, kindness and connection as we enter 2025.
This week I’m sharing a few things to do (starting with tonight!) and a summary of scheduled well-earned rest dates for several local businesses. But first, I hope everyone came away mostly unscathed from the high winds and day-after-Christmas power outage. I know many of us are grateful for the crews at Tillamook PUD for working tirelessly through the nasty rain, wind and dark hours to restore power to us all. If you want to send a note of thanks, you can send an email to: jstelzig@tpud.org.
New Years Eve
At the Bookstore
Ring in 2025 by hanging out with book people (or just the books). Cloud & Leaf Bookstore will be open from 4-8pm serving wine and offering you a corner to sit and reflect. They’ll have supplies for you to write a letter to yourself, whether you reflect on gratitude, plans for 2025 or just need to shed 2024. They’ll keep it in a lockbox and mail it to you in December 2025.
At North Coast Pinball
At Pine Grove Community Center
Celebrate at a family friendly New Years Eve event starting at 7 pm. Dancing with DJ Prana Wave, soup from Natasha at Wild, Heart of Cartm craft table, costumes and face painting, kid’s parade/conga line, and midnight parade to the beach.
New Years Day
New Years Day Labyrinth Walk: Christy Kay will play Singing Bowls at St. Catherine’s Community Labyrinth from 1 – 3pm on New Years Day.
Who's watching the Oregon Ducks play in the Rose Bowl?! Kick off is 2pm. ESPN is broadcasting.
Polar Plunge anyone? This may be the year that I watch, but I’ve said that before. Please send me a photo if you go!
Christmas Tree Pickups - Jan. 1 and Jan. 11
Trees placed in front of your home will be picked up on Jan. 1 or Jan. 11. Nehalem Bay Volunteer Fire Association will burn the trees on the beach on Jan. 18. Visit https://nbvfa.square.site to make your suggested $10 donation and arrange pickup. Donations go to the NVBFR’s fire-fighter scholarship program. Questions, text Nyssa at 503-812-5702.
NCRD Winter Schedule
Whether it’s the holiday treats settling in or the chill in the air, January brings thoughts of nesting and self-care. With that comes plans for getting organized, setting goals, and yes, exercise. We are lucky to have North County Recreation District (NCRD) in our backyard. Note that the facility is closed on January 1. The pool reopens on Monday, January 6; and the winter schedule begins on Sunday, January 5. Class descriptions are posted at www.ncrd.org/fitness-center#Classes. You can register online or via phone.
Winter Spa Days
January may be the perfect time to book a relaxing day at Spa Manzanita where they provide personalized care that rejuvenates your mind, body, and spirit. Go to https://www.spamanzanita.com/ to read about their offering of therapeutic massages, revitalizing facials, nurturing body care treatments, infrared sauna and Reiki energy healing sessions.
And Pauseful Massage may be just the pause you need in the new year. They offer experiences with a unique blend of mindfulness, therapeutic relating and massage. https://pauseful.com/pauseful-massage/
Business Closures
Dixie’s Vino is open New Year’s Eve until 5pm but is closed from Jan. 1 - March 1.
Heart of CARTM is closed Dec. 31 - Jan. 29.
Wild Coast Goods is closed for Winter Break, Jan. 6 – 17.
Yolk is closed from Jan. 3 – 24.
If you know of other businesses taking an extended break, please let me know in the comments or email me at angieshatfield@gmail.com.
Dungeness Crab Season!
I spotted several commercial crabbing boats off the coast this morning, which prompted me to call Little Apple Manzanita and Fresh Foods. They both said they do not currently have crab, but expect/hope to have fresh crab in this Friday, Jan. 3.
This is a recipe I’ve made over the years during the holidays. It makes a fancy and delicious appetizer or salad and doesn’t require too much crab. It comes from a Nordstrom cookbook and in addition to crab, includes mango, avocado, cucumber, tomatoes and a cilantro-lime dressing. Happy Crabby New Year!
