Manzanita Connections – May 6, 2025
Mother’s Day, Mudd Dogs, the Farmers Market, and Haircuts by Myriah
May means Mother’s Day, and in Manzanita, May means time to eat a Chicago-style hotdog and celebrate the opening of the farmer’s market. This week I’m sharing a few last-minute ideas for the moms in your life, and what’s new at both Manzanita Mudd Dogs and this year’s Manzanita Farmers Market. I also want you to meet Myriah Mathews who is accepting new clients for hair services, followed by some miscellaneous word-on-the-street news.
Mother’s Day Ideas
Show some love to the mamas and all the special women who mother. Perhaps a delicious local breakfast or a leisurely stroll on the beach is in order. Flowers and relaxation (at the spa or the wine bar!) are always a good idea. More ideas:
Order by tonight! Neahkahnie Blooms is taking flower orders through tonight (May 6) for delivery on Friday, May 10 or Saturday, May 11. Look for grab-and-go bouquets on Friday at Green Coast Market in Rockaway.
Start mom’s morning with hot little donuts and coffee at Pacific Roots Donuts on the Nehalem River. Try The Dirty Shirley, a “cinny sug with brown butter maple drizzle.” I’m having one in honor of my mom, Shirley. Well maybe I’ll have a dozen. She would want that.
Check out the Mother’s Day Spa Special available through May 11 at Spa Manzanita. Gift certificates also available.
Take mom to the Nehalem Bay Garden Club plant sale this weekend and choose a planter or hanging basket filled with colorful annuals and fuchsias.
Get Ya Mudd Dogs!
It still surprises me when I come across someone local whose never had a Mudd Dog or doesn’t know where the hotdog stand is located (58 Laneda Avenue, just steps from the beach on the south side). I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be a tourist to visit the hotdog stand. Luckily there’s now extra seating. And tomorrow, the Mudds will be paving the entire seating area, which will make it more accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Open 11am – 6pm every day but Wednesdays, the hotdog stand will be open every day of the week through mid-September once school is out. In addition to Chicago-style hotdogs with the works, they also have vegan hotdogs, wine and beer (both basic and “fancy”), and new to the menu is salmon chowder. And know that if you spy someone walking down Laneda with a root beer float … they got that A&W number at the hotdog stand.
Good to know: They also do private events. Reach out to manzanitamuddogs@gmail.com if you’re looking for an evening gathering place.
Manzanita Farmers Market Opens May 16
Opening day of the Manzanita Farmers Market is Friday, May 16. The market will be open every Friday from 4pm – 7pm through Sept. 19. This year, the market is changing up the layout, including moving the stage under the trees and creating a more defined community hangout area with live music, face painting, and food carts.
Look for many of the market’s favorite vendors to return, such as Wolfmoon Bakery, Moon River Farm, Neahkahnie Smokehouse, River City Flower Farm, The Aloha Hippie, and Fulton Farms. Gnarly’s Tacos also returns, and newcomer Malia’s Grill will be at the market serving up Hawaiian plates and poke. All Good Co, a small batch coffee roaster based in Astoria, will be brewing coffee sourced from a family-owned ranch in central Colombia. With the opening of the new City Hall next month, note that there will be real bathrooms available at the farmer’s market. Good news for some of us.
Haircuts by Myriah
Admit it. You’re tired of driving to the valley to get your hair cut. You’d rather be at the beach. Meet Myriah Mathews.

Myriah works out of the J. Marie Salon + Spa in Nehalem. She is currently accepting new clients (women and men) for haircuts, coloring by consultation, and styling. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are her regular days, but she’d like to add another day. Do yourself a favor. Text Myriah at 503 583-5061 or book an appointment online. She is also open for house calls and on location services for girl’s days, weddings, and such.
After owning a hair salon in McMinnville for 10 years and now calling herself a traveling hairstylist, Myriah divides her time between the Manzanita-Nehalem area and McMinnville. About three months ago, she was able to find a place to live in Nehalem and started spending most of her time here near the beach with her cattle dog Beau. The beach is good for both of their souls and she’s enjoying getting to know the community.
You may have spotted Myriah’s artwork at Manzanita News & Espresso, where she has two books on the shelf.
One is an adult coloring book, Coloring Adventures: Help Unwind & Spark Self-Growth. It’s filled with inspirational quotes, photographs, and intuitive drawings that give space for self- reflection and inspire positive thinking.
Her gratitude journal, The Adventures of Celerina: Interactive & Inspiring, contains a collection of drawings you can color, self-help questions, and motivational words of affirmation.
Misc. Word on the Street
Andrea Trautwein and Dennis Boardman from Bay City Wellness and Nehalem Massage are now available for massages in the building that was formerly Do Ju Moon on 8th Street in Nehalem. Dennis works Sundays and Mondays in Nehalem, and Andrea works Fridays and Saturdays in Nehalem. They offer 90-minute massages for $165. Book online, with Andrea at 503-681-9767, or Dennis at 503-680-1343. They also sell gift certificates.
Are you wondering what’s being constructed next to the wine bar in Manzanita? Not surprisingly, it’s going to be retail on the bottom with living above. Word is that Bahama Mama’s will be moving into the building a little closer to the beach. Which begs the question, what will move into their old space?
Jeff’s next raw honey “pop-up” is Thursday, May 15 from noon to 4pm next to Handy Creek Bakery in Wheeler. You can reach Jeff via text at 208-424-0042 or email at jwmerc@gmail.com.
Mark your calendars for the North Tillamook Library Friends Book Swap and Donation Drop on May 30 and 31 at Pine Grove Community Center. More detailed info to come in the May 20 newsletter.
Yesssss who is moving into the Bahama mama current location???
Also I will hopefully fingers crossed be selling plants this weekend - and art and small batch goods at COVE -
